Determination of tribotechnical properties of oils and oil additives
Armands Leitāns, Jānis Lungevičs

Description of the Technology

Determination of tribotechnical properties of lubricants (oils, oil additives) based on laboratory measurements using a tribometer (see Fig.1). The test oil is used for lubrication of the friction pair ball-plane, when testing the flat part is the rotating element, while the ball is the static element.  In the measurement settings it is possible to vary: friction pair contact load, linear speed, test duration or number of cycles, friction pair materials, lubricant,  oil additive concentration. Result obtained: value of coefficient of friction, wear on the plane material and the ball (determination of the wear volume with a profilometer and optical microscope). Measurement methodology according to DIN 50324.

Applications

Evaluation of tribotechnical properties of lubricating material; Evaluation of abrasion resistance of friction pair materials in lubricating material environment.

Advantages

The effect of different lubricating materials on the wear resistance of the friction pair can be assessed in a relatively short time.
