Abstract

Developed technology allows to produce highly porous titanium dioxide ceramic with variable pore size and porosity. Material can be characterized with fully open and interconnected pore structure. Such ceramic can be used as scaffold in bone tissue regeneration. Thermal treatment of ceramic under high vacuum conditions produces electrically conductive ceramic that allows to use it as electrical stimuli supplier in bone tissue regeneration, as electrode in electrophoretic deposition or water disinfection.

Description of the technology

Highly porous titanium dioxide ceramic with fully open and interconnected pore structure were produced via polymer replica method followed by two-stage thermal treatment. Depending from used precursor is easy to adjust pore size in the range from 70 to 700 µm and porosity up to 95% of the final product. Realizing thermal treatment under high vacuum condition, highly porous ceramic with electrical conductivity comparable to semiconductors can be obtained. Produced materials are cytocompatible and can be used in bone tissue regeneration. Electrical properties of material allow to use it as electrode in water disinfection or in electrophoretic deposition to obtain different coatings, for example photo-catalytic.

Applications Highly porous ceramic can be used: 1) in medicine: production of bone grafts or scaffolds with varying pore size and porosity, as well as electrical stimuli supplier in bone defects; 2) as electrodes for water disinfection; 3) as porous foams to apply photo-catalytic coatings for water treatment.
Advantages

The developed technology allows to produce highly porous ceramic for different applications. Production technology is quit simple with low cost.
