The invention relates to composition of porous ceramic with open porosity and permeability which is a result of formation of pores as a consequence of chemical reaction and elimination of hydrogen. The ceramic material is coated with a catalyst that breaks down organic compounds. The role of catalyst plays a nanodisperse coating of transition metal oxide such as Co3O4 or Fe3O4. The catalyst in a form of metalorganic compounds is put on the ceramic and consolidated during thermal treatment in pyrolytic process. The ceramic filter with catalytic coating may be used in a form of granules or compact filter for catalytic purification of water contaminated by organic compounds.
