Andis Supe, Kaspars Zaķis, Jurģis Poriņš

The invention is related to the field of telecommunications, more specifically to amplifiers used in fiber optic transmission systems. The hybrid amplifier combines Raman and parametric optical amplifiers into one combined solution, where the signal is simultaneously amplified by both Raman and parametric amplification in a high non-linearity fiber. The Raman-parametric hybrid amplifier may potentially be used in wavelength division multiplexed multi-channel communications systems as inline or preamplifier to compensate for signal power losses arising from the transmission process. The hybrid amplifier of the invention application has high usage potential in multi-channel communications systems where existing amplifiers cannot provide signal amplification.
The invention is capable of providing more than 33 dB signal gain for input signals with a data rate of 40 Gbit/s and the input power of -40 dBm per data channel. The gain difference does not exceed 1,9 dB in the frequency range from 196,1 to 197,6 THz corresponding to the S band range and thus extending the working range of the existing amplifiers.
