Industrial sector is one of the biggest environmental polluters. One of the most important environmental problems is air pollution, and special attention is paid to global warming. Energy consumption in industry in 2008 was 318 Mtoe (27%) of the total energy consumption in the EU-27. Latvian energy consumption in industry in 2008 amounted to 773 ktoe, which corresponds to 16% of the total final energy consumption. Looking at the performance levels, Latvian industry consumes more energy to produce one unit of output than the EU-27 average, as evidenced by the data, as in 2005. The EU-27 average was 0.156 koe / Euro, total energy consumption for production of value added, but the Latvian 0.210 koe / Euro. Research shows that overall industrial sector has high energy efficiency (EE) potential.
