As the United Nations Organization has declared in the year 2011 “The International Year of Chemistry” it is important to remember the history of chemistry and its chemists in Latvia too and to do some research in this field. We owe it to the chemist E. Schimansky to show the some important public moments in his life. The article describes Stefan Schimansky (1868–1931), a graduate of the Riga Polytechnic and professor of chemistry of the Polytechnic Institute of Riga, the professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Iwanowo-Wosnesensk in Russia. Professor Schimansky as well as his activities in these institutions have often been described, but his life and his last years are lesser known. He returned from Russia to Latvia together with his wife in 1922, became a citizen of Latvia and worked at the Private Russian Technical School of Engineers of Nikolai Okolo-Kulak as a teacher from 1922 und from 1928 to 1931 as the director of this school. Caused by the lack of research public knowledge was, that he worked as the director from 1922 on, but this was not so. S. Schimansky is the author and co-author of textbooks and his publicationas in Russian are well known. In 1922 two of his textbooks were printed in Latian, but they are lesser known and they have become bibliophilical rarities. One of his most famous pupils was Pjotr Budnikow (1885-1968), he became a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union and an Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
