This PhD thesis researches the contribution of digital systems and their usage extents in the real-life architectural design, defining main advantages of these systems and reviewing their innovative potentials. In world, the accomplishment of many contemporary architectural trends has been possible only due to digital design tools. The research of these digital systems is essentially actual in Latvia, because so far they have not reached the comprehensive usage level if being compared to the world experience. The first part explores theoretical viewpoints in digital architecture and in the vast possibilities of digital design tools. Both classical and innovative or unconventional digital tools have been investigated. The working results of an architect can substantially be influenced by his tools and their usage skills. The second part analyzes projects whose design has involved digital architectural design tools. Analyzed objects are organized ir two subchapters – in context of the world and the Baltic states. The research comprises the findings of facts and information. Author indicates how comprehensively various methods of digital systems have been used for achieving effective results or what means should have been used to make the design or fabrication processes more effective with respect to time and quality. The third part is devoted to theoretical and practical findings in architecture and their potential usage in architectural design. The complex of authors experiments made in connection to this PhD research complements the part of practical research about the digital systems in architecture and their unlimited possibilities, applying new and non-standard design methodologies from contemporary and innovative architectural theories. The fundamentals of all various design methodologies are scientifically grounded but relatively little researched, their contribution enriches the field of contemporary architecture by offering completely other breadth of view in non-standard design situations. Within the framework of experiments author offers new methodology complex of a system for the usage of digital systems to sophisticate the quality, esthetic merit, technical advancement and other factors in architectural design industry. Author emphasizes – to design in utterly new ways, architects must use innovative design software and hardware that at the same time breaks the classical notions about the art of making architecture. New kind of strategies need to be developed and applied. It is possible to promote the variety of creativity in architecture by just using the innovative and unconventional digital systems. Only by experimenting and developing advanced ways of design, it is possible to learn new construction methods and not vice versa.
