In this article the current state of lightning protection and overvoltage protection in Latvia has been looked at. The main focus is drawn to changes in the normative system according to enactment of building norm LBN 201-07 ‘Būvju ugunsdrošība’ since 1. march in 2008., which makes compliance with the international standards series 62305 obligatory in designing and construction of lightning protection. A comparison and evaluation between the traditional Franklin (passive) and active lightning protection is given. Suggestions, how to deal with the current problems in lightning protection, are also given.
