The analysis of the losses that are caused due to corrosion is an important input in the economy of Latvia and European Union. The corrosion of the ship´s constructions and equipment is a considerable proportion of the total corrosion losses, thus it is the basis for further investigation and developments for protection from corrosion, providing the ship building companies with corrosion preventive materials and tools. To specify for each corrosion protection method requirements that ensure the ship’s, it´s constructions service reliability by reducing the overall corrosion to an acceptable extent, the selective nature of corrosion, erosion corrosion and corrosion prevention of mechanical damage, including: a) the possibility to combine different methods of protection - the use of complex methods – for corrosion prevention or reduction; b) avaiability of methods and protective equipment, technologicality and implementation simplicity in shipbuilding, maintenance and repairs; c) the reduction of the amount of metal work during construction, increasing the vessels operating period, maintaining the speed of ships project, decreasing of fuel consumption;d) the possibility of using new, advanced shipbuilding materials and alloys, in principle, creating new shipbuilding and the World Ocean exploring resources;e) high technical-economic effectiveness of corrosion protection and increasing of ships operating profitability. The classification societies persistently put accent on the need for metallic materials, that are used in shipbuilding, to be of high corrosion resistance. Considering the analysis of corrosion in examined ship´s constructions and equipment and the tendency around the world, the Authors according to the prior direction of states science development – Innovative materials and technologies, enhance the research about nanostructured multifunctional materials and nanotechnologies, adapting it to the properties of the corrosion of details and nodes of seagoing ships.
