The Cathedral School in Riga which is the oldest school in Livonia has worked under different names in its century old existence. between 1804 and 1860 she worked under the name of "First District School" and has been reorganized since 1861 into a "Realgymnasium". From 1873 she was called a "Gymnasium" with da section for natural sciences. The cathedral school of Riga had firm contacts to the first university in Riga which was the "Polytechnicum" (Riga Polytechnic). The Riga Polytechnic started its activities in 1862 and it seemed selfevident that a part of its pupils would study there. This was only possible after the the curricula of the Gymnasium were changed so that the school prepearde the pupils in natural sciencis, which werte requrede for the admission to the studies. Many pupils of this former cathedral school have finished the Riga Polytechnic. Some teachers of the Gymnasium were teachers of natural sciences at the Polytechnicum too.
