The aim of this paper is to define factors for suppression and identify entailed problems in media relations, therefore promoting an understanding of media relation and communication risk factors and prevention possibilities, developing also the suggestions on improving media relation praxis. The fact that the practice of Latvia’s media relations frequently faces suppression or refusal of information, therefore denying society comprehensive information, makes this theme even more topical. The author of the present research came to the conclusion that suppression and refusing of information involves various technologies, determined by legislative, cultural-historical, ethno-psychological, socio political factors The analysis of the factors determining suppression allows interpreting consequences of suppression as waste for organization, waste for media and waste for society. All participants of the communication process are linked in common space of information and common cycle of communication. They impact the whole process of production, receiving and interpretation of information. Disturbance of communication may happen in each and every process mentioned above, thereby necessarily resonating with others. Responsibility of media in this process is increased as they play an important role of society agenda setting and acts as an advocate of interests of society and thereby can substantially increase, or, on the contrary, minimize the risk of the involvement of society in the public discourse. Recognizing that suppression doesn’t encourage formation of qualitative media relationships, and realizing impact of factors creating suppression, public relation specialists and managers will develop better understanding of qualitative media relationships, which will help to ensure successful functioning of an organization to avoid conflicts, misunderstandings and negative publicity and will contribute to the establishment of a democratic society.
