The article analyses the main provisions of the Directive of the European Union in the field of energy, adopted in 2009, and their differences from the earlier of the programme documents. Research the main directions of development of energy developed in the strategy for the period up to. 2020 "Energy 2020. The strategy of the competitive, stable and secure energy", adopted in 2011. The principal as in the Directive, and in the Strategy are transformations envisaged in the energy market: the possibility of access to. the market of new suppliers, including from third countries; the creation of new systems of energy supply, in which every user is able to. at the same time act in the role of producer and supplier of energy, as well as other transformations and directions of development. Is considered the proposed in the strategy system "Smart grid", variants of which have been tested in many countries.
