The Engineer Gustav Adolph Agthe and His Family

G. A. Agthe(1850 - 1906) was the oldest son of the organist of the Riga Cathedral Johann Christoph Agthe and became one of the best known alumni of the Riga Polytechnic. Some years after he finished his studies as an engineer he put his knowledge into practice in Switzerland. Since 1879 he wowed his life to develop of the city of Riga and to modernise its communal economy. For 20 years he was the leading engineer of the town. Some of his masterpieces were the pontoon bridge crossing the Daugava, the big staple houses near the Daugava and a bridge over the canal near the bastions mountain (Basteiberg). While he was in office he started to be interested in the sewage system of the town. In 1882 a horse drawn tramway was put into function. In 1899 he became the director of the Riga tramway system an of the Riga construction company. In 1901 in Riga the electric tramway began to work and this is one of his merits. G. A. Agthe was also involved in the development of the construction site of Kaiserwald /Mezapark/ . After his death the Riga construction company was directed by his brothers son Heinrich Oskar Agthe. Other members of G.A. Agthes family have worked in Latvia and in other European Countries.
