The Experience of Riga Technical University in the Industrial Robot Application in Training and Research
2012
Ivars Karpičs, Zigurds Markovičs

This article provides a survey, which describes the knowledge of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (Riga Technical University) in the field of industrial robotics. The article is structured as follows: first, the training process is introduced and then research is provided. To describe the teaching methods, an overview of the given study courses is given. All study courses include mainly the practical assignments and exercises. Each student obtains basic skills, which can be used to model industrial robot station and program it for a particular industrial task (welding, painting, palletizing and other tasks performed in manufacturing). Research results are based on the applications developed by the academic staff, undergraduate and graduate students. In their theses, students develop industrial robot control algorithms for tasks, which require intelligence. For example, a robot station, which plays checkers with a person, has recently been developed and become widely popular. At the end of the article, goals and directions for further research are pointed out.
