This paper proposes an adaptation of the Local Binary Patterns operator for the design of an automatic face recognition algorithm. The automatic face recognition process is divided into three main stages: face detection, face localization and face recognition. The authors developed an approach for the realization of all these stages based on a single Local Binary Pattern (LBP) transformation. An innovative LBP-based eye-pupil detection technique for precise face localization is also presented in this paper. The simplicity of the proposed methodology makes it potentially well suited to embedded solutions with limited computational power and memory. The parameters of the algorithms are evaluated on a color FERET database.
