Every nation's history has significant and fateful moments that have been secured deeply in people's memory. During commemorative times one needs to find comfort and strength. Nature and beauty are sources of deep emotional human experience. Love of nature and religious symbolism is characteristic to the garden art of ancient Eastern cultures. In Western Europe, however, parks were formed in accordance with the surrounding landscape, combining natural and man-made. Contrasts between deciduous trees and conifers ware used to make parks more beautiful. The idealized Russian park landscape is reminiscent of a painting. Sentimental and romantic gardens were established in Latvian territory in 18th century. The memorial "Garden of Souls" on the Krievkalns island in Daugava river, known as the Latvian destiny river, will cause a profound emotional experience in its visitors.
