Electricity deficit in Baltic region has been rising during last four years. There is a lot of discussion whether Baltic region has sufficient generation capacities to ensure sufficient security of supply and energy independence. The article gives a general overview about electricity generation capacity and electricity balance in the Baltic region. The article concludes that the region is not in electricity deficit due to lack of generation capacity, but due to commercial issues – import is cheaper that generation costs in Baltic power plants. In the coming three years total capacity of interconnections between Baltic and Nordic region will increase five times that will provide bigger electricity Exchange possibilities between both regions. If no big power plant projects are developed? Electricity imports into Baltic region could increase up to 40-50% of region’s consumption.
