The Use of Latvian Plants for Wool Dyeing

Dyeing with natural or vegetable dyes from plant and other organic sources are known in the world from prehistoric times [1].Natural dyes in Latvia have been used for the colouring of natural fibres, such as flax, wool, cotton and silk as well as for leather [2]. Nowadays the interest for natural dyes is a result of awareness and demand for natural products [3]. Natural dyes are eco-friendly, biodegradable, non toxic, and less allergenic in comparison to synthetic dyes [4]. Latvian handicraftsman’s use natural dyes for manufacturing of crafts since ancient times.
