Descriptive Geometry at the Riga Polytechnical School and Riga Polytechnical Institute (1863–1919)

The Riga Polytechnical School started its operations in 1862. In the first year of its existence, it started with preparatory courses for its future students to enable them to follow the courses in natural sciences. Enrollment of students started in 1863. The start of the Polytechnical School where the students were taught to be engineers was called “Polytechnikum zu Riga” (Riga Polytechnic School). Since the academic year 1863/64, the subject “descriptive geometry” was included in the programs of the institution. When the institution started to work, the teachers of descriptive geometry were alumni of universities in German speaking countries like Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Since the end of the 19th century the teachers in descriptive geometry were alumni of the Riga Polytechnical School and in the 20th century of the Riga Polytechnical Institute. An outstanding professor of the didactic of descriptive geometry at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was the graduate of the University of Dorpat/Tartu Karl Reinhold Kupffer. In the first half of the 20th century, the alumni of the Riga Polytechnical Institute taught descriptive geometry at various higher education institutions in Latvia, Russia, Lithuania, and other countries.
