The Grewingk Family and its Relation to the Tartu University and the Riga Technical University

This article tells about the Grevingk family originating from Courland and is believed to be of Latvian descent, but the way of writing the family name varied over the time between Grevingk and Grēviņš, and as it infrequently happens in Latvia, one part of the family is considered to be Baltic Germans, while the other – Latvians. The most prominent member of this family is without any doubt the geologist and mineralogist Constantin Grevingk (1819–1887), professor at the Tartu University and author of many publications, one of the first geologists and archaeologists in the Baltic provinces, who left a legacy of timeless scientific works. His publications were present in the library of the Polytechnical School and Polytechnical Institute in Riga. Jānis Grēviņš is the director of the Riga Business School of the Riga Technical University and is the son of Edmunds and Ruta Grēvina, who works as a docent at the University of Latvia. Members of this family have always been connected to higher education institutions in Latvia, where they have studied and worked, including at the first institutions of higher education.
