Levoglucosenone (LGO) (6,8-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-en-4-one) is commonly produced by synthetic preparation and catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose, both. The objective of the present study was to find out, whether it is possible to produce LGO from lignocellulosics (LC) (birch and pine wood) and to improve its yield by changing the natural composition and structure of wood during hydrothermal acidic prehydrolysis of deciduous wood for obtaining chemicals such as furfural and acetic acid from pentosanes.
