Livonia is - even though it is long remained pagan and only at the end of the 12th Century missionized - at the beginning of the 13th Century quickly attached to the Christian Europe . Here, at first especially the Cistercians played a crucial role. At the same time Livonia became associated with the Christian European intellectual tradition.
