Using of Computer Algebra Systems in Latvia and Riga Technical University

Nowadays new technologies are increasingly coming into everyday life. Computer algebra system began to appear in the beginning of 90-ties. It is the most important innovation in educational technology after the Internet. The most popular of computer algebra systems are MATHEMATICA, MATLAB, MATHCAD and MAPLE. Computer algebra systems become most used in the developed universities of the world. Survey has shown, that in Latvia, unfortunately, computer algebra systems are still not enough known. For developing systems, in 2006/2007 academic year Riga Technical University started to use the software Mathematica for teaching the Higher Mathematics. At this moment Department of Engineering Mathematics of Riga Technical University offers to students labs, where students solve the same tasks as at tutorials, but using the computer algebra system Mathematica. Mathematica is a computational software program used in many scientific, engineering, mathematical and computing fields, based on symbolic mathematics. Since 1988 Mathematica is developing very fast, on starting from Mathematica 1 to the present Mathematica 9.
