City is a complex and multifunctional organism whose architectural spatial planning is affected by the layout of streets and squares. Since the end of the 17th century, Liepaja city center building grew around the New Market Square which in 1911 was transformed into Rose Square. The change of the national political system and ideology was reflected also in Liepaja city center's structural, functional and artistic design. Rose square survived the bombing of city center during World War II, and nowadays it reflects the urban development ideas. Previous research: The culture of Liepaja urban development has been studied insufficiently. The development of Liepaja's planning has been studied by architect Gunars Jansons in his book "Ancient wooden buildings in Courland cities" and by painter Imants Lancmanis in his books "Liepaja from baroque to classicism" and "Bertschi". Research goals: Determine the changes in the architectonic spatial composition, and the functional and artistic design of Liepaja city center and Rose square since the beginning of the 20th century till the present day.
