Nowadays it is widely known that the decrease of the use of fossil fuels and the reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions is one of the top priorities in most of the European countries. One of the most popular substitute energy sources for the supply of energy are different kinds of biomass. The largest share of energetic biomass is taken by woody biomasses, including wood logs, and wood chips. The woody biomass also serves as a raw material for the production of several energy resources, as briquettes, pellets, and synthetic gas or pyrolysis oils. For all of these applications the biomass requires drying. The drying process is energy intensive, and also it has been shown that during the drying process different harmful substances are released into the atmosphere. Intensive biomass consumption will increase these emissions and the problems connected with them. Thus it is very important to develop solutions for a sustainable use of biomass. In this paper the positive effects of low-temperature drying are discussed.
