The main issues that have arisen during the adaptation in Latvian of the standard IEC 60617 “Graphical Symbols for Diagrams” prepared by the International Electrotechnical Commission are considered in the article. The translation was done according to the existing rules of the Latvian literary language and in line with the officially accepted terminology. It is also supplemented with 65 comments as well as explanations of English abbreviations. Until now electrical design offices and other companies in Latvia have been often using different graphical symbols for designating the very same element on a diagram in electrical design documentation. It has made the identification and practical use of such documentation difficult. Thus the translation of the standard will promote the unification of electrical design documentation and will improve the competitiveness of Latvia’s companies on an international scale. Adaptation of the standard was done by efforts of Riga Technical University under order of Latvenergo AS and Augstsprieguma tīkls AS. The article contains 4 figures and 12 sources of information.
