The Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Latvia during the period between 1919 and 1940, Latvian State University (1940–1941) and the University of Latvia (1942–1944) has prepared 414 specialists. Almost 1/8 of them were women. Upon having performed research in archives and libraries, the author could obtain data on the majority of graduates and their career after the graduation. According to rough estimates, at least 1/6 of the graduates from Latvia perished during World War II – a part of them were killed, while others fled the country or were deported to Siberia. The graduates have made a significant contribution to the chemical sciences and industry, but they were also teachers at various schools and universities. Alumni of the Department of Chemistry have worked in Latvia, Germany, Palestine, Canada, the United States and other countries.
