The article covers the formation of the higher education in machine engineering in Latvia and its development over fifty years from 1864 until 2014. It tells about establishments, activities and development of the Higher Machine Engineering School and the regularly changing social-economic and political circumstances forming a part of the Riga Polytechnicum, Riga Polytechnical institute, University of Latvia, State University of Latvia, restored Riga Polytechnical Institute and the Riga Technical University.
