Abstract Use of role-play as a type of training in the Masters course of Environmental Policy and Economics, which is taught to first-year students at Riga Technical University, is examined in the paper. The main goals, methods and order of performance, as well as structure and sequence of the work are defined. Three seminaries are provided, in which students made presentations and were involved in discussions, and the individual work – analysis of literature and mass-media information, as well as arrangement of reports and calculation of the costs – was performed. Gains of use of the method for the professional knowledge and practical skills are described in the research. Theme of the role-play is selected according to the situation in Riga in 2014 and gives a possibility to simulate the labour process of governmental and non-governmental organizations.
