In the 13th century the Roman Catholic Churches got interested in the lands inhabited by the Baltic tribes. In September 1234 in the regions governed by the Curonians the Bishopric of Courland was founded. Piltene was chosen as the capital city, but the Commandry was placed in the Bandava administration centre – Aizpute. The sacral buildings influenced the planning and building of Piltene and Aizpute.
