At the end of 2008 the fourth year students of Riga Building College worked out annual thesis about urban development in order to give proposals to Jauniepāja (New Liepāja) inhabitants about the environment improvement. It was possible to see the work in the exhibition “Jaunliepāja. City – Environment – Person”, which was opened in Riga Building College and Riga Technical University Liepāja branch. Nowadays young people would like to live in a developed and attractive environment. Lots of them have chosen the architecture specialty to develop their skills connected with design and territory improvement. Youth has got their own future vision; therefore the given assignment in the study process to work out proposals for the urban development in Jaunliepāja seemed to them exciting and modern. While working out the proposals, the historic aspect was very important. When starting the work of proposals development for the improvements of Jaunliepāja residential block, we together with the youth visited the new artists’ exhibition in the Art Academy of Latvia in Riga dedicated to wooden building problems in Latvia and watched the film “Wooden Riga,” which has been made in cooperation with the architect Pēteris Blūms. Every student chose a residential building block in Jaunliepāja for their improvement proposal; therefore the proposals and solutions were very different. The architecture student’s work about the Jaunliepāja topic and the exposition was organized in cooperation with the chief architect of Liepāja City Iveta Ansone and the chief urban designer Arvīds Vitāls. The curator and work advisor of the event was the architect Silvija Ozola. Forty-three pieces of work were exhibited in the exhibition – wall charts and models. The architects from Riga Building College and Architecture and Urban Development Department of Riga Technical University took part in the opening of the exhibition. Irēna Bākule, architect of the State Inspection for Heritage Protection expressed her opinion about the youth’s work: “Liepāja is a multi-layered city from the cultural heritage point of view. The people of Liepāja should be more active, defend more fiery and maintain the values they have in the city. Unfortunately, there are cases, when the carefully and with love prepared proposals are replaced with vulgar solutions made just for profit purposes. Good luck to Liepāja inhabitants!”
