High Temperature Porous and Dense Ceramic from Latvian Quaternary Clay

Ternary system MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 contains many valuable crystalline phases such as spinel and cordierite. Extremely low CTE (1.5•10-6 K-1) allows them to be used in conjunction with other thermally demanding materials. In this work the use of Latvian clay for preparation of both dense and porous cordierite ceramics was studied. It was determined that the use of illite clay of 1/3 of total mass can be used to prepare both dense (strength ≈ 400 MPa) and extremely porous (porosity ≈ 96%) materials.
