Paper contains review of studies on influence of motor vehicle engine air filter restriction on vehicle parameters [1, 2, 3]. According to maintenance instructions issued by vehicle manufacturer, engine air filter must be replaced with certain periodicity. Depending on vehicle type, periodicity is between 20 000 – 80 000 km. Correct decision of replacement is connected with technically and economically based system of technical servicing. Unjustified replacement of engine air filter cartridges has impact on maintenance expenses and preservation of resources of nature. More precise way to determine correct moment of necessity of replacement of air filter cartridge is to measure restriction air filter causes in engine air intake. According to manufacturer information and studies of other authors, value of maximal restriction is approximate 52 mbar beyond restriction value of new cartridge [2, 3]. The study evaluates influence of value of air filter restriction on some performance parameters of vehicles, such as power, torque and fuel consumption. Author presents methods of research, describes equipment used on experiments and mathematical methods of preparing of recorded data [5, 7, 8, 9]. Tests were conducted on four different vehicles to evaluate influence of restriction on different types of engines – naturally aspirated, turbocharged, spark and compression ignition. Results obtained with all the samples have been presented and critically examined.
