Planning and building of Courland and Semigallia cities in the Republic of Latvia until the Second World War In order to create public space at the beginning of 19th century in the towns of Courland Governorate there were new artistic, aesthetic considerations proposed – it was strived to connect town building, streets and squares into a joint planning composition. At the second half of 19th century production and transport changed town planning, spatial organization, construction arrangement and character. The typological variety of public buildings increased. The idea of ensemble was implemented in town environment. At the beginning of 20th century the artistic attention was paid to the street, where there were the luxurious rent houses with shop premises on the first floor and it turned quickly into a business centre. In the Republic of Latvia the city construction had a new task – to solve flat issue. The implementation of agrarian reform gave opportunity for planned development of towns. Each city elaborated development plan and it was started to improve the town environment in Latvian traditions. The topicality of the research: to find out the changes created in planning and construction of town of the Western regions of Latvia in the time of the Republic of Latvia, in order not to lose the peculiarity and identity in the future development period. The goal of the research: to compare town development plans, to find out the main tendencies of construction and planning development in the time of the Republic of Latvia.
