The activities of the famous Latvian engineer Mārtiņš Bīmanis have repeatedly been described, but while we are waiting for his 150th anniversary some unknown facts of his life became known. Engineer Bīmanis spent a significant period of his life in Moscow (1893‒1920), where under his leadership a sewerage network was built, using the latest methods of wastewater treatment. He learned about the sanitary industry during his visits to the Western Europe and participated in the All-Russian Congress of Water Supply and Sanitation. He returned to Latvia and became a Professor with the University of Latvia and for some time was the Rector of the University of Latvia (1931‒1933). He has made a significant contribution to the organization and installation of the sewerage and water purification network in Latvia. His son Victor – born in Russia – worked as a chief designer of boilers in a plant in Podolsk, a town near Moscow, and after World War II he decided to return to Latvia, the homeland of his parents. He lived in Riga until 1971 and was buried in the Forest Cemetery in Riga.
