The activities of the professor of physical chemistry of the Riga Polytechnic Institute and the University of Latvia Mieczyslaw Centnerszwer (1874–1944) have already been described several times, however up till now there has been no information about his relations with Latvia. In 1929 he moved to Warsaw but he remained a citizen of Latvia and in 1930 he began receiving a pension of the Republic of Latvia for the time he had worked in Latvia. In 1931 there were changes in the Legislation in Latvia and it was forbidden to be paid a pension if the person was still working. As Professor Centnerszwer was living in Poland he did not know about the new law. In 1933 it turned out that Professor Centnerszwer had received 7172 Lats contrary to the new law and was asked to pay the money back. Centnerszwer applied for the Polish citizenship, which he was granted (and laid down his Latvian citizenship) and did not pay the money back, he had honestly earned his pension in Latvia; he was old and was not able to pay back such a sum. He kept friendly relations with his former colleagues at the University of Latvia.
