After graduating from the Department of Mechanics of the Riga Polytechnic Institute in 1915 Valdonis Kalniņš (1886-1945) worked for a short time as an engineer in Moscow. Having returned to Latvia he became a teacher and afterwards was the Gymnasium director in Smiltene. Some of his students have studied engineering at the University of Latvia.
