It is important to assess sportsman results not only due to the necessity to determine the best performers within the scope of a single sport but also between various kinds of sports. It is not only essential for forming the state’s national teams for competitions at various levels and determining the sportsman of the year, but also for granting funding and preparing for important competitions. Latvian Athletic Federation has established a very wide and detailed system of results evaluation. Unfortunately the weaknesses in evaluation of the results of the World Championship, European U-23, U-19 and The World Universiade were found. Analysis of the technical results mentioned above proved that the ranking of the World Universiade is lower than the World Championship but higher than European U-23 and U-19. Therefore more points should be awarded for results at the World Universiade than at European U-23 and U-19. It is necessary to develop a new points system which evaluates a place at the competition considering the density of results among finalists and the winners, as well as for ranking sportsmen objectively for granting funding and when they are preparing for important competitions.
