The goal of the paper was to determine the necessity for the students of Riga Technical University (RTU) to practice therapeutic exercise within the framework of mandatory sports classes. During the 13 study years (2001–2014), the numerical strength of the therapeutic exercise groups was determined in relation to the total number of students. The research demonstrated that the percentage of students with health issues did not change significantly and varied between 11,2 % and 12,4 %. This is a large number of students; therefore, it is necessary to organize sports classes which would strengthen the students’ health by applying a special program in order to ensure a proper study process for the prospective specialists. The most characteristic diseases were determined. Out of the total number of diseases, about 60 % were musculoskeletal system diseases: posture problems (spinal deformities, both frontal and sagittal plane deformities, chest deformities, flat feet, etc.), joint problems (hereditary and as a result of an injury), and various injuries. The second group of diseases constituted of cardiovascular diseases forming 10,7–17,8 % out of the total number of students. The third group comprised students with functional gastrointestinal disorders – 10–15,1 %. The fourth group, students with respiratory system diseases, made 10–8,9 %, and students with skin disorders formed the fifth group – 2,4–3,2 %. Students’ attitude towards classes of therapeutic exercises was determined. Screening the spectrum of student health issues enabled the authors to develop the body of optimum physical ways and means as well as to optimize the exercise program. Considering the large number of students who attended 100 % of the classes and the relatively low percentage of non-attendance without a justifiable reason, it is possible to conclude that: specific characteristics of the students’ health were considered; during two semesters, students mastered the breathing techniques and techniques of the corrective and pilates exercises; students were introduced to qigong exercises. During a year, students developed a conscientious attitude towards the therapeutic exercise as a way of ensuring their health. The positive emotional ambience and good physical feelings accompanied the impact of the physical load on a weakened body. Students developed a conscientious attitude towards the regimen of physical exercises, which is necessary for a healthy lifestyle.
