The students going in for sports sometimes suffer injuries. In many cases, it is possible to prevent injuries by applying protective and preventive measures. In order to reduce the number of injuries, it is important to inform the students about sport injuries and their consequences, possibilities of protecting against them, and develop first-aid skills in students. The aim of the work was to clarify the students’ awareness about safety measures during sports lessons, about possible injuries in sports, and other questions connected with sports organization, as well as the opinion of sports teachers about the organization of sports lessons at school, sport injuries, and problems the sport teachers are facing during the sports lessons. A questionnaire of eleven- and twelve-grade students from Riga schools and an interview with sport teachers were carried out. A total of 160 students from two Riga secondary schools were questioned, and 2 sports teachers from Riga schools were interviewed. The results of investigation showed that the majority of respondents (students) consider that the information on safety compliance, sport injuries and the first aid given in cases of injury provided during sports lessons is incomplete. According to students, the most important causes of injury during the sports lessons are carelessness (57 %) and safety violations (31 %). At the same time, teachers see a wider variety of reasons for injuries. Students acquire first-aid skills in different subjects at school. The majority of respondents (students) (83 %) marked that they learn also theoretical knowledge about sports in sports lessons, and the greatest part of them (67 %) consider it as necessary. In order to improve the quality of sports lessons, students recommend to improve the sports equipment and master different branches of sports. A smaller part of the questionnaire students (11 %) note that more attention should be paid to safety compliance during sports lessons. Teachers, in their turn, point out that serious problems during the sports lessons are students’ laziness, insubordination, the large number of students in classes, and the weak general physical fitness of students. The recommendation is that students, at least once during each semester, should meet medical staff which could give a qualified first-aid training and tell how to proceed in situations of sustaining an injury.
