The aim of the present research is to describe Emma Liekne’s work in the development of pedagogy. Her pedagogical work should be studied in the context of historical events and pedagogical views of Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. Emma Liekne took part in international congresses of teachers and psychologists and fought for a better financial situation of the teachers. She was a school director in Riga (1919–1934; 1940/41), a teacher of modern languages (German, English, French) teaching methodology, one of the first teachers who described the role of the European pedagogical assumption as significant for the development of Latvian education. Among Emma Liekne’s professional interests were girls' education and aspects of the education of women. The teacher Emma Liekne laid much stress on the health of the pupils and their preparation for their family life, for conducting their own home. For her remarkable contribution to pedagogy, the Republic of Latvia awarded Emma Liekne the Order of the Three Stars in 1929. The teacher Emma Liekne had five stepchildren and two children of her own. Her daughter Velta Eleonora was killed by a shrapnel of a grenade in childhood during the Latvian War of Independence in 1919. In the Second World War, the whole family of Emma Liekne – her husband Jānis Lieknis (1883–1941), her son Laimdots Jānis Lieknis (1922–1942) and she herself – were killed as they were sympathisers of the Soviet power.
