In the 13th century the Roman Catholic Churches got interested in the lands inhabited by the Baltic tribes. In September 1234 in the regions governed by the Curonians the Bishopric of Courland was founded. Pilten (now Piltene; 1557) was chosen as the capital city, but the Commandry was placed in the Bandava administration centre – Hasenpot (now Aizpute). The sacral buildings influenced the planning and building of Pilten and Hasenpot.
