The Swiss psychoanalyst and pedagogue E. Schneider belongs to those personalities who are known globally among the scientists of psychoanalysis and their activities are written in the history of the University of Latvia. He is one of the pioneers of psychoanalytic pedagogy in Latvia. In 1920 E. Schneider was invited to teach psychology at the University of Latvia. He held courses about the psychology of puberty and about pedagogy, experimental psychology and the pedagogy of children with educational disabilities. Outside the university Schneider held lectures about psychoanalysis and worked as a psychoanalyst and this is probably the reason why he got into a controversy of opinions to his colleagues and contemporaries in Latvia. He was invited to hold lectures in Latvia as well as abroad. During his years in Latvia (1920–1928) he wrote important books in German language: About stuttering and how to heal it (1922), Psychoanalysis and the Education of Teachers (1926) and others. He published several articles in the Latvian press and was a collaborator of the journal “Mūsu Nākotne” (Our Future) of the Teachers Association of Latvia. In 1920 foreign lecturers at the University of Latvia got the permission to lecture their courses in their native languages and so E. Schneider held his courses in German language, but in 1927 he was invited to hold his courses from 1928 on in Latvian language. And he was asked to write a second doctoral dissertation and to defend this dissertation in Latvian language in faculty, because his dissertation which he had defended in 1914 in Basel, Switzerland had been voted down in the University of Latvia. He defended the use of the German language by declaring that his procedure enabled the students to read foreign scientific literature in the original language, but his arguments were rejected and so he was forced in 1928 to quit his post as professor at the University of Latvia. This article has been realized by the use of material from archives and libraries and some of it has been published for the first time.
