Sapropel is a semi-renewable subterranean resource: these are lime and fine-grained sediments of lakes rich in organic matter. Sapropel stocks in Latvia amount to 700-800 m³ m3, but in the bogs below the peat layer they reach 1.5 billion m3, totaling 2 m 3 (Seglin, 2002). Sapropel with high organic matter content is suitable for use in agriculture and horticulture as a soil substrate and enhancer and also as a binder or adhesive for the production of environmentally friendly materials (Obuka et al., 2016; Balčiūnas et al., 2016).
