Red mud is a waste generated in large quantities during the processing of aluminum bauxite. Considering that Brazil is one of the main responsible for waste generation in the world, many studies have been carried out with the objective of finding a viable purpose for the red mud. In spite of the researches to verify better results and increase of resistance after the insertion of the residue in ceramic materials, the use of the residue in large scale is problematized by the environmental question, since the red mud is characterized by high alkalinity and existence of heavy metals in its constitution. Thus, this research aims to evaluate the possibility of insertion of the residue in the constitution of flexible pavements. For this, previous tests were carried out evaluating properties such as penetration, softening point and adhesiveness in asphalt binder mastic 50/70 and red mud added in three different percentages (3%, 5% and 7%) in relation to the total weight of binder. Results showed an increase in asphalt stiffness, which could possibly improve the performance of the permanent deformation of asphalt mixtures.
