The main methodology, for achieving sustainable development of economy, is to create innovative product or technology during the time of doctoral studies. In Riga Technical University tree main instruments are used for centralized development of innovations: 1) the study subjects, such as scientific project management, intellectual property and patents and planning of experiments; 2) involvement of doctoral students and post doctoral researchers as main contributors in internal annual scientific projects; 3) the development of criteria to financially support internal annual scientific projects,- measurements have been developed in such a way, that financial support at first is granted to those projects, which involve industry partners, doctoral and post doctoral students as researchers, and as the result of this project should be developed patent application. Introduction of such project-based learning approach should help Riga Technical University (RTU) to achieve two main goals in research direction: preparing new generation of researchers and increasing research budget, by increasing amount and the quality of research done at the Riga Technical University.
