Transdisciplinarity in Implementing the Study Course “Latvian as a Foreign Language”

Each year, the number of foreign students coming to Riga Technical University, who are willing to obtain higher education and learn the Latvian language as a foreign language, is growing. A significant fraction of these students comes from the Asian countries; and many of them have to face the challenge of not only learning the Latvian language, but also building awareness of the Latvian culture. The present paper provides an overview of the experience of the paper author obtained delivering the study course “Latvian as a foreign language” in the autumn semester of the academic year 2018/2019 to 11 students from Beijing International Studies University (BISU) with the preliminary knowledge of the Latvian language at level B1. Within the framework of the study course, trans-disciplinary pedagogical approach was used, supplementing language acquisition curriculum with in-depth information about the Latvian culture. Language acquisition as a process involves not only developing knowledge about communication practices and culture of another people and country, but also gaining of new self-improvement experience. The aim of self-improvement is to widen the existing scope of attitudes towards oneself, others, nature, work, and the country. The subject being acquired – language, music, dance, literature – becomes a pedagogical tool in gaining new experience. Resting on these premises, the paper analyzes the experience of the author through the prism of trans-disciplinary pedagogical approach.
