Autorotation of Freely Falling Rectangular Plate
Transport. Education. Logistics and Engineering – 2021: The 6th International Scientific and Practical Conference: Proceedings 2021
Mārtiņš Kleinhofs, Vladimirs Vorohobovs

Auto rotation of a rectangle that falls through the air was considered. Semi-empirical formulas for rate of rotation and for speed of fall were obtained. The mathematical method of creation of such semi-empirical formulae, based on splitting the task and separate consideration of a set of influencing factors, was developed. One correction coefficient was introduced because two open ends make this problem three-dimensional. The other coefficient is responsible for bifurcation. Simple expression for Magnus and Drag forces were used. All obtained formulae were experimentally proved. An optimal ratio between the length and width for longest fly time was found.
