This paper presents and compares experimentally obtained efficiency maps of the induction motor and synchronous reluctance motor in the whole working range. MTPA and constant Id control strategies for SynRM were applied to implement required traction curve. Losses distribution of the motors at rated speed are also presented. Traction SynRM was designed and produced with aim to find magnet-free alternative to conventionally used for trolleybus traction IM. The testing was conducted in manufacturer’s laboratory on full-size trolleybus traction motors. Laboratory setup and measurement equipment is presented in the paper.
