The method of the thermite welding is widely used on the Latvian railway. Presently in the area of railway switches it is the basic method of rails connection.The analysis of metal structure in the area of the rails thermite welding pointed, that a metal is not homogeneous and has pores, and similarly unmolten oxides of metal (ferrous dross of Fe3O4 ; Fe2O3). Some unmolten elements of ferrous dross contain defects which under the action of remaining tensions are the source of cracks development.
